treasure tuesday {joecat}

this is joecat's collar & makeshift name tag {he hated wearing anything around his neck!}...i saved this because i couldn't bear to throw it out. it's matted & ratty-looking, but it was what the vet gave us that frightful night we had to put him down.when i first met joe [my husband], he had just acquired this little kitten from a friend of his. they thought it was a female until the vet told joe that "she" was a "he"...& joe named him, simply, "joecat". he was a skittish, nervous nellie type, who bit toes & loved to play rough with joe's other male cat, t.j. then we moved to maine and over the years there joecat became known as a "sugar" cat [i used to live in the south and "sugar" refers to getting hugs & kisses, or simply "some lovin'"]...he wasn't the type who would let you pick him up...HE had to be in the mood & whenever he was, he would jump onto your lap [or on the bed] & purr for some sugar. he so loved getting sugar..he even drooled & made dough on you [as cats like to do]...he was the sweetest, gentlest cat we had. he would never hiss or bite...he was a good boy. & he loved to take naps in the sun in the most unusual places, like this laundry basket (& there weren't even any clothes in there either!)... on one of my birthdays, joe found a stray kitten on the job site. actually, the kitten was apparently hungry & starving, because joe found it hungrily eating his hotdog, which he left on the dashboard of his truck. he brought this kitty home, thinking that he would find a home for this stray. i took one look at this kitty & said, he's ours! he was a miniature version of joecat! and so i dubbed this new kitty, "mini-me" [the second austin powers' movie was playing at that time], after joecat. & who would've thunk that these two would be the best of pals? joe cat was mini-me's best friend...they were inseparable! mini-me adored the earth that joecat walked on! it was unreal that two {male} cats were so incredibly tight like that... flash foward a few years, to a horrific scene one night last march 2004. joe & i had come home from a dinner out and joe shouted, "something's terribly wrong with joecat!" i rushed to our bedroom & was terrified to find joecat in utter distress, breathing so shallowly & labored>>>my immediate thought was of that of someone going into cardiac arrest!>>>& the pained & terrified look in joecat's eyes. he was dying...and we didn't know why! we rushed him to the vet & she gave us the terrible news...joecat had an enlarged heart & that he had lost circulation in his limbs. she said that she could operate but the chances of his survival were slim to none. oh how joecat was suffering. joe & i were plagued with grief and disbelief. there was no choice but to let him go...so he would no longer have to suffer & endure unimaginable pain. we said our goodbyes, wept as the doctor put the mask over joecat's face, & he was gone. he looked like he had fallen asleep, like one of his naps that he was so fond of taking. never in my life had i ever had to euthanize a beloved pet. we were so distraught coming home very late that night. the other cats, particularly mini-me, were wondering were joecat was. they could sense something was terribly wrong. and poor mini-me, how he cried for joe-cat. it was so heartbreaking to hear mini-me's cries. but as the days turned to weeks and the weeks, months...we all moved to a new house...we still were devasted by the loss of joecat...then out of the blue, a stray, orange kitty appeared on our back door...it was hungry & skinny-looking. joe thought it was a wild cat...but he felt bad for this cat & so left some food out for it. well, guess what happens when you leave food out for a starving cat? the cat adopted us! he was skittish, but gradually warmed up to us. all of sudden, he was coming into the house on a regular basis. my little nephew nicky was visiting & he called this orange kitty, "wiley" because he was a wild cat. & you know what? he has become part of our kitty tribe now. & you know what else? he absolutely worships mini-me! he cannot get enough of mini-me. they are inseparable...it's like joecat's spirit is here, but in wiley's form! in many ways, wiley has an uncannily similar personality as our beloved joecat. sometimes i think that joecat is watching out for us...& maybe he sent wiley to us! How touching! We have the collar saved from the dog we had to put down several years ago. Sometimes you just need those reminders.

    I've posted a treasure as well. Stop by and take a peek.

    Sweet....I am sorry about your kitty, but glad that Wiley came around. We had a pup when we were kids that my sister loved, but we only had 2 months before he died. About 6 months later another one just showed up at our door who looked suspiciously like the previous one. My sister called her her "God Sent Dog" and it sounds like you have a "God Sent Cat" too.

    I am a sucker for a cat.

    I love people that 'love' animals the way that I do...they too have spirits, souls, feelings, love....they for the most part take care of themselves in a lot of respects...what a beautifuls story about them!I have not experienced losing an animal just yet, and dont know how I will handle it...your memories feel like joecat is still here with you...:)
